Minimum Qualifications
On or before November 1, 2025, you must have:
For Environmental Conservation Police Officer Trainee 1 titles – Exam Nos. 21-010020, 21-011020 and 21-012020:
Either 1: a bachelor’s or higher-level degree;
Or 2: an associate degree; AND one of the following:
a. one year of experience in the areas of environmental engineering or environmental technology, freshwater or marine sciences, wildlife sciences, or forestry; OR
b. one year of experience as a police officer with Municipal Police Training Course certification (or equivalent course approved by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council). A certified Peace Officer Training course does not meet this requirement; OR
c. one year of experience as a certified federal law enforcement officer; OR
d. two years of active United States military service** with an honorable discharge or under conditions in the New York State Restoration of Honor Act;
Or 3: three years of experience as a police officer in New York State with Municipal Police Training Course certification (or equivalent course approved by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council). A Peace Officer Training course does not meet this requirement.
Examples of experience that will not qualify as Environmental Technology experience are: Equipment operators, laboratory workers, and laborers. Qualifying experience in Environmental Technology must be at a paraprofessional or higher level in areas such as solid and hazardous waste, remediation, or pollution prevention.
Examples of experience that will not qualify as Forestry experience are: lawn mowing; landscaping; tree and brush trimming; pesticide application; sawing firewood; farm hand; and other types of experience that are categorized as laborer or maintenance work in a garden shop, park, or forest setting.
Examples of experience that will qualify as Forestry experience are: tree physiology, silviculture, dendrology, mensuration, the planning and supervision of disease and insect control, marketing of timber products, and timber cruising.
**Armed forces Reserves and National Guard duty in response to federal activation (including active duty for training) will be accepted upon receipt of documentation showing federal activation.

For Forest Ranger 1 title – Exam No. 21-013020:
Either 1: a bachelor’s or higher-level degree;
Or 2: an associate’s degree in Applied Forest Management, Aquaculture & Aquatic Science, Environmental Biology, Conservation Science and Wildlife Management, Conservation Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, Environmental and Natural Resources Conservation, Fisheries Science, Fisheries Technology, Fish and Wildlife Technology, Forest Engineering, Forest Management, Forest Resource Management, Forest Resource Technology, Forest Resource Technology: Wildlife Resources, Forest Science, Forest Technology, Forestry, Forestry Management Technology, Forestry and Wildlife Management, Land Surveying Technology, Natural Resources, Natural Resources Conservation, Natural Resources Management, Natural Resources Technology: Wildlife Resources, Wildlife Biology, Wildlife Resources Management, Wildlife Technology, or any other associate’s degree accredited by the Society of American Foresters;
Or 3: two years of active United States military service*** with an honorable discharge or under conditions in the New York State Restoration of Honor Act AND two years of qualifying experience in forest management, fish and wildlife management, forest, fish, or wildlife interpretation in a wildland setting, or law enforcement in a park, forest, or wildland setting.

Or 2: two years of active United States military service with an honorable discharge or under conditions in the New York State Restoration of Honor Act;****
Or 3: four years of United States military reserve or any state National Guard service;****
Or 4: two years of experience as a police officer within New York State with a valid New York State Municipal Police Training Course certification approved by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council;****
Or 5: two years of experience as a peace officer within New York State with a valid New York State Municipal Police Training Course certification approved by the NYS Municipal Police Training Council.****
****30 college semester credit hours can substitute for one year of the required experience.
